How to Eat Healthy on a Busy Schedule

My Friend Shona asked me on Facebook yesterday for tips to eat healthy when you are super busy. I thought it was a great idea for a post because lets face it – it can be challenging. We all have partners, children, pets, jobs, friends, social commitments we can’t get out out of, a house that needs to be cleaned more than once a month, and parents that should be visited more often (sorry parents!). So here is my tips for how to eat healthy when you are super dooper busy and don’t even have time to wash your hair.

Plan Ahead

Take time out to plan your meals for the week. What are you doing this week? How many nights will you be home for dinner? Write a list of what you are eating each night for dinner and stick it to the fridge and then go out and buy all the ingredients. Make the recipes that require the most fresh ingredients first. What I find most difficult is planning meals – it’s finding the head space and down time to do it.  If I do this on the weekend when I am less busy and have all the ingredients ready to go I find the cooking part relatively easy during the week.

Make More Than You Need

Who loves leftovers as much as I do? We always make more food than we need for a meal. This way I can eat it for lunch the next day and don’t need to spend time making something new.

When You Can’t Be Bothered To Cook

We always have a few Pitango soups and curries in the fridge for those nights when we don’t feel like cooking something from scratch. I also like Syndian products – they are vegan, organic and gluten free and only requiring heating in the oven or stove.

If the Fridge And Cupboard is Bare

By all means eat out but just make sure you are not buying greasy take away. Try Japanese and get brown rice sushi or a soup; other Asian restaurants have nice (veggie) stir fries;  or Lebanese – lots of dips, salads and grilled veggies. If you are going to buy pizza – at least make it gourmet pizza! The ingredients will hopefully be fresher and you might even be able to get it with a gluten free or thin wholemeal crust.

If  You Must…Get Quality Junk Food :)

We always have chocolate, ice cream and chips in the house….I find it essential to have the healthier brands in the house so I’m not tempted to eat junk if people offer it to me at work, when I’m out etc.

I LOVE

…Well, naturally - They make fantastic dark chocolate in many different flavours. Their chocolate is vegan, dairy free and sweetened with stevia.

Nushie’s Natural - Their ice cream is nothing short of amazing – It’s organic, dairy and gluten free and made with coconut milk.

Absolute Organic Chips – Vegan, preservative free, additive free, organic and they come in lots of different flavours. Beetroot is my favourite.

So there you have it. Some easy steps to ensure you eat healthy even when you are super busy. On another note, I was the guest blogger at A Fresh Legacy today…make sure you have a look at my post about basil and kale!

What are your tips/ways to eat healthy? Do you also struggle when you are busy?
