A girl at my work is doing a detox for two weeks. She asked me to keep a food diary with the hope that it would give her some ideas and inspiration on what to eat while on the detox. I got very excited about the idea and said yes straight away. The reason for the excitement was because the last time I kept a food diary 5 years ago and surprise surprise it was a bag of baloney. My personal trainer asked me to keep a food diary as a way of establishing if I had a “good diet” needless to say I lied and left a few snacks and meals off the list (half a block of chocolate, chips, biscuits, you get my point). The problem was I was keeping the food diary for the personal trainer – not for me. I really didn’t want to do it so I made up my diary to avoid what would be a long lecture.
This time around I really wanted to keep a food diary, for me!
Why you may ask? When you keep a food diary you have no way to hide what you are really eating – you can’t gloss over it it’s staring right in front of you. It gives you clarity. I consider myself a fairly healthy person but I was curious to see if there were any areas where I actually wasn’t so healthy? I was up for the challenge to find out. The process was certainly uncomfortable at points, there were times when I was writing in my food diary and I was saying to myself geez did I really need to eat that? I wanted it to be as true of a representation of my eating habits as much as possible so I made myself be as normal as possible.
When keeping a food diary do it from a place of love – not fear.
Gabrielle Bernstein constantly reinforces that we need to act out of love and not out of fear. If I was keeping food diary and afraid to write down the truth, judging myself and lying it wouldn’t have given me results I could take action with to improve my life. You will undoubtedly have some ah geez moments in the process of keeping a food diary but simply acknowledge the feeling and remind yourself that we are all on a journey to improve ourselves and our health and where you are today is exactly where you are meant to be in the process.
Take action by writing a comment on how you are going to improve your food habits today. And please share this post if you found it valuable – If you did I’m sure your friends will too!
